“Torrelama Room Breakfast” lies on the north coast of Bari, between the municipalities of Trani and Bisceglie.

Located in the region of “Lama Paterna”, the area is of considerable interest as it is part of one of the most significant areas da the landscape point of view in the North of the Land of Bari, characterised by frequent ravines, of which it represents one of the most complete examples and impressive even for the natural width.

A coastal tower dating back to the end of the ‘500 dominates the entire surrounding landscape and increases the environmental importance of the town. A bridge in natural stone, the “Ponte Lama”, built starting da 1800 to overcome the difference in height, dominates the same Lama. These towers constituted the defensive, sighting and communication system along the coastal strip of the Kingdom of Naples. From each tower it was possible to scan the sea and usually see the two adjacent towers, with the possibility of sending light and smoke signals to transmit a message or request assistance. It is of the quadrangular base type with three drains on each side: this scheme was conceived in the mid-sixteenth century by two Neapolitan royal engineers: Benvenuto Tortelli and Giovan Tommaso Scala, the latter also the designer of the mighty Bastion of San Martino, still existing on the front of the Port of Bisceglie.

The “Olivieri” Tower was completed in 1598 and is one of the most interesting da an architectural point of view in the Land of Bari.

The town of Trani is famous all over the world for its architectural beauties. The historical centre rises around the arm of the small port that for centuries has characterised the socio-economic fabric of the city. The skyline seems suspended between land and sea and its icon is the famous  Cathedral dedicated to San Nicola Pellegrino. The building is one of the most famous examples of Romanesque architecture also for the direct view of the sea and was declared by UNESCO as a “messenger monument of a culture of peace”. Its construction began in 1099 and accessed via a double flight of stairs leading to the bronze  portal, one of the most interesting examples of the style in Southern Italy, is the work of Barisano da Trani and was completed in 1175.

In addition to the Cathedral, a must for those in search of historical and artistic treasures is the Castle which rises a few meters da the prestigious Romanesque church. Among the few castles in Italy to be built on the sea, this structure was designed by Frederick II, as a defensive element. Today it is particularly famous for the re-enactment of the wedding of king Manfredi, son of the “Puer Apuliae”, with Elena of Epiro, in 1259. Not too far da the castle there is also the Jewish quarter. Venturing into these narrow streets you have the chance to admire the old synagogues including the Sinagoga di Sant’Anna and its museum.

Not far da Trani is located Castel del Monte,one of the symbols of Puglia. The mysterious manor da the octagonal shape wanted by Frederick II extends with its profile over the endless countryside surrounding the city of Andria.

A few kilometres away it is worth stopping in Barletta, a city famous for the evocation of the epic chivalrous battle known as “The Challenge of Barletta”. Here you can immerse yourself in the impressionist atmospheres of the works of Giuseppe De Nittis.

For those who love uncontaminated nature a walk in the National Park of Alta Murgia  is mandatory, where outcropping rocks, old carob trees and bushes of Mediterranean scrub draw a suspended landscape.
